Complete the required course

Under 18: the 6-hour DETS course. 18 or older: the 4-hour TLSAE (drug and alcohol) course. Both are online and reported to the state for you.

Study and pass the Knowledge Exam

50 multiple-choice questions, 40 correct to pass. Applicants under 18 may test online with a proctoring form; adults test at a service center.

Gather your documents

Identity, Social Security proof, two proofs of Florida residency, and parental consent if you are under 18.

Visit FLHSMV or a Tax Collector office

Pass the vision (20/40) and hearing screening, pay the fee, take your photo — and walk out with your learner’s permit.

Drive with restrictions

First 3 months: daylight only. After that: until 10 p.m. Always with a licensed driver 21 or older in the front seat.
